11th October 2014 IBPS PO Evening session Exam Analysis

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducted Online Examination, for the recruitment of Probationary Officer, across the country on October 11, 2014.

There were 200 questions in the paper - Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness, English Language and Computer Knowledge. Each question had 5 options. There was negative marking of one-fourth or 0.25 of the marks assigned to that question for all the sections.

The details of the individual sections are given below:

Some of them even follow a numerous strategies for a single exam.Storage Devices are the places where the computer stores the data. The term memory in the computer is used to store the data or information, which will help to access this information anytime when required. It acts as a storage device. There are some external devices, which are connected to the computer to store data, which are called peripheral storage device. Examples for peripheral storage device are external hard disk, flash drive, disk drive, CD ROM, DVD ROM etc. Let see the detailed explanation of storage devices.

There are two types of memory storage are:

Primary storage device
Secondary storage device

Primary memory is the main memory of the computer, is linked to the CPU, and is the part of the base unit. RAM and ROM are different divisions of the primary storage. RAM is termed Random access memory is used for temporary storage. All the data and programs required for running a process are stored, until the process is over. RAM storage space can make the computer work faster. Since it is the temporary storage memory all the data is lost when the power is turned off. There are different types of RAM are: SRAM are static random access memory, DRAM are dynamic random access memory, PRAM are phase change random access memory. RAM is volatile memory

ROM is termed as a read only memory. It is meant for the information that is permanently required to run the computer and the information will remain even if the computer is switch off. It is one of the important memory where it contains all the information that the computer requires to start up. There are different types of ROM are: PROM are programmable read only memory, EPROM are erasable programmable read only memory, EEPROM are electrically erasable programmable read only memory, CD-ROM are compact disk erasable read only memory. ROM is non-volatile memory.

Bit is the smallest memory unit. Geop byte is the highest memory unit. Flip-flop is the smallest memory device. Cache memory is the fastest memory of the computer. External hard disk is the slowest memory device.

Secondary memory is the memory where all the data and program are not running on the CPU are stored. The commonly used secondary memory storage device is disks and tapes. There are different types of disk are hard disk, floppy disk and compact disk. Hard disk is the internal storage memory in the computer. Some of the storage devices are floppy disk, hard disk, digital audio tape, CD ROM, DVD and pen drives.

Floppy disk is divided into the concentric circles called as a track, where as the track is further is divided into the sectors. The small hole present at the disk represent the starting point of the sector and is called as a index hole. Floppy disk can store up to 1.44MB or 2.88MB of the information. The floppy drive on the computer is referred as ‘B’ drive.

Hard disk can store large volumes of data as compared to the floppy disks. The capacity of the hard disk is 40GB to 200GB. Hard disks are portable. It is made up of metal and coated on both sides with metallic oxide. The alphabets D, E, F etc are used for the external hard disk in the computer.

Pen drives or flash drives are storage device with the capacity ranging from 256MB to 8GB and more. It is very small, portable, and easy to carry the volume of data.

Computer networks are mainly divided into three categories:

Local area network [LAN] – the network of computers in the same building or belonging to the same owner. Inside the LAN every computer is well identified and usually every user is known. It is considered a trusted area.
Wide area network[WAN] – computers which connects the LANs, computers and users identification is very hard. It is considered a dangerous area.
Virtual private network – is a way to recognise a computer outside the LAN as a trusted computer : the user is identified with a password and his computer. VPN is typically required to identify portable computers connected via wireless connection.

Network Components

Hub – Computers are divided into groups and are connected directly to a special device called hub. Every hub is connected to a main hub; in very large companies there are many main hub connected to a higher level hub and so on.
Cables – The network connecting components are the cable, which often determines the speed of the LAN. Cables have a speed measure in bps.(bits per second). Some of the cables are:

ü Ethernet: Cables have a speed of 10mbps and thus carry 1.25MB each second.

ü Fast Ethernet: cables have a speed of 100mbps.

ü Giga Ethernet: cables have a speed of 1Gbps.

Gateway – when a LAN is connected to the internet there is one or sometimes more than one, special computer called gateway dedicated to this connection and to keep relations with the outside world.
Firewall: a program in charge of rejecting unwanted incoming connection attempts and sometimes of forbidding unauthorized outgoing connections.
Domain Name Server: a program in charge of dealing with computer addresses.
Web server: a program in charge of publishing web pages. The web server offers the local web pages to users outside, answering to requests coming from external users.
Mail server: in charge of receiving e-mails from the internet and displacing them to the right local user.
Mail reader : A mail reader is a client program to send and retrieve e-mails. It runs directly on the user’s computer and connects to the local mail server. To communicate with the mail server the mail reader uses special languages called protocols:

Post office protocols to retrieve e-mails at port 110.

Simple mail transfer protocol to send emails at port 25.

Internet mail access protocol is the more modern protocol.

Resource sharing :

Resources sharing is what makes computer networks different from a general networks and this is often over looked by the novice user. Resources which can be shared are:

The processor or the memory : computers and terminals may use the computational resources of a more powerful computer.
Hard disks: computers and terminals often access each other hard disks to read data and sometimes may use a special computer as a storage machine.
CD reader or DVD reader: computers may read CD and DVD physically inside the reader of another computer.
